How AquaLots Works

AquaLots is a marketplace for the UK fishkeeping hobby — a place to buy and sell live fish, plants, invertebrates, corals, and aquarium equipment. Here's how it works.

Auctions

Sellers list fish and livestock with a starting price and an end time. You place a bid — the highest bidder when the auction closes wins. All bidding is live and you'll be notified if you get outbid so you can bid again.

When you win, you'll be taken through checkout to choose your delivery method and pay securely via Stripe. The seller is notified and dispatches your order.

Auctions run for 1–14 days. Sellers can set a reserve price — a hidden minimum — so the item only sells if bidding reaches that level.

Buy It Now

Buy It Now listings have a fixed price — click Buy Now and it's yours immediately. No waiting for an auction to end. Some listings also accept offers below the listed price.

It's the quickest way to buy when you know what you want and the price is right. Sellers set a fixed price based on what similar fish are selling for.

Prize Competitions

Prize competitions are raffle-style draws where you buy tickets for a chance to win an aquarium prize — equipment, livestock, vouchers, or other aquatics items. Tickets are a few pounds each, and a winner is drawn at random from all valid entries when the competition closes.

To enter you answer a simple question as part of your ticket purchase. Competitions are open to UK residents aged 18 and over.

Selling on AquaLots

Anyone can sell on AquaLots — hobbyists selling surplus offspring, breeders, or established aquatics businesses. Listing is free. AquaLots charges a final value fee only when your item sells.

To start selling, register for an account, verify your email, and connect a Stripe account to receive payouts. You can then create listings immediately.

All payments are processed by Stripe and held securely until delivery is confirmed. Sellers are rated by buyers after each transaction — your rating is one of the most important trust signals on your profile.

Payments & buyer protection

All payments on AquaLots are processed securely by Stripe. Buyers pay at checkout — funds are held until delivery is confirmed, then released to the seller. This protects both sides of the transaction.

If something goes wrong — an item doesn't arrive, or isn't as described — you have 7 days from delivery to raise a dispute. AquaLots reviews the evidence and works to reach a fair resolution.

Always transact through AquaLots. Purchases made outside the platform (bank transfer, cash, PayPal) are not covered by buyer protection.
