Shipping & Collection
Couriers, packing, heat packs and collection in person.
Which couriers can I use for live fish?
APC Overnight and DPD are the most widely used couriers in the UK fishkeeping hobby. UPS and DHL may also accept live fish on a case-by-case basis — always confirm with your local depot before booking. Do not use Royal Mail for live fish — it is prohibited under their terms and you may be liable under the Animal Welfare Act.
What service should I book?
Always book a next-day guaranteed service (pre-10 or pre-12 where possible). Standard, economy, or 2-day services are not acceptable for live animals — even a short delay can be fatal.
How should I pack live fish for shipping?
Stop feeding fish 24–48 hours before shipping to reduce ammonia. Use an appropriately sized fish bag sealed with pure oxygen (not air). Place it in a polystyrene-insulated box with a heat pack in cold weather — never directly against the bag. Label the box clearly: LIVE TROPICAL FISH / THIS WAY UP / FRAGILE. See our full Shipping Guide for step-by-step instructions.
When should I use a heat pack?
Use a heat pack whenever ambient temperatures are below 18°C. A 24-hour heat pack is suitable for standard next-day UK shipping. Never place the heat pack directly against the fish bag — always use a layer of newspaper as a buffer to prevent overheating.
What are the best days to ship?
Monday to Wednesday is ideal — parcels arrive Tuesday to Thursday, avoiding the risk of sitting in a depot over the weekend. Avoid shipping on Thursday or Friday, before bank holidays, or during extreme cold or heat.
Can buyers collect in person?
Yes — you can offer collection as a delivery option on any listing. Always meet in a safe, public location if you don't know the buyer. Confirm payment before handing over the animals, and keep communication on AquaLots until the sale is complete.
What should I do if a buyer isn't home when delivery is attempted?
This is why it's essential to confirm with the buyer that they'll be home before you book and pack. If the parcel is redirected to a collection point, transit time extends significantly. Contact your courier and the buyer as soon as possible if this happens.
